Scientists Stunned by Discovery of Unique Golden Shark in Costa Rica


Off the coast of Costa Rica, a group of fishers pulled up what’s now being called the rare golden shark. It looked unreal, like something straight from a cartoon. About the Species

Nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) are not what you’d call flashy animals. Normally they’re brown or gray, sometimes tan, blending right into the ocean floor. They spend their nights hunting for small sea creatures like crabs, clams, stingrays, and spend their days resting in caves or under rocks.

They can grow pretty big, up to 2.5 meters long, and though they look intimidating, they’re mostly docile. People dive with them all the time.

Sadly, these sharks are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing have taken a toll on their population. So finding one alive and healthy is already good news. Finding one that looks like it swam out of a sunset? That’s extraordinary.

Why the Shark Is Golden
