Investigators are working to understand the motive behind Charlie Kirk’s assassination, questioning why a 22-year-old assassin would target the conservative activist at Utah Valley University. While Tyler Robinson sits in jail awaiting formal charges, new details about his alleged motives reveal online radicalization, personal hatred, and ideological conflict that culminated in violence.
Charlie Kirk’s Assassin’s Possible Motive
FBI Director Kash Patel revealed Robinson’s mindset during a Monday Fox News appearance. Robinson had sent a text message stating he had “the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and he was going to do that.” When pressed about his reasoning, Robinson’s response was blunt. “Some hatred cannot be negotiated with.”
Robinson wrote a physical note before the shooting declaring his intention to kill Kirk. Though he destroyed the note, forensic experts confirmed its contents through interviews and evidence analysis. The premeditation extends beyond a single moment of rage into calculated planning.
Robinson also allegedly admitted to the killing after the September 10 shooting. These admissions, combined with DNA evidence linking Robinson to both the rifle and tools found at the scene, build a strong case for intent and execution. Since his arrest, Robinson has refused to cooperate with law enforcement.
His Family Recognized Him From FBI Photos
Robinson’s arrest came through family cooperation. After the FBI released surveillance images, a family member recognized Robinson and contacted a family friend, who alerted the sheriff’s office. Police arrested Robinson on Friday, September 12, near St. George, Utah.
The arrest revealed chaos following the shooting. Police detained another man, George Zinn, who yelled, “I shot him, now shoot me,” at the scene. Zinn later claimed he said this “so the real suspect could get away,” but authorities found no evidence connecting him to Robinson or the plot. His motivation for trying to help an unknown suspect remains unexplained.
Down the Rabbit Hole
Utah Governor Spencer Cox pointed to Robinson’s internet activity as key to understanding the motive behind Charlie Kirk’s killing. Cox described Robinson as someone who had become “radicalized” through time spent in what he called the “dark corners of the internet,” particularly Reddit and gaming platforms.
“Clearly there is a lot of gaming that was going on, that deep, dark internet, the Reddit culture and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep,” Cox explained during a Meet the Press appearance.
Robinson’s family confirmed he spent enormous amounts of time online, scrolling through content that shifted his worldview from his conservative upbringing. The FBI is conducting what Patel calls a “reverse daisy chain analysis,” examining everyone Robinson contacted across Discord and other platforms. Agents seized multiple electronic devices from his home, including computers, laptops, gaming systems, and phones.
The Political Ideology Question
Cox characterized Robinson as having developed a “leftist ideology” despite being raised in a conservative Mormon household. This assessment has sparked discussion, given the ambiguous evidence found at the scene.
Shell casings recovered near the rifle contained engravings that divide interpretations. One casing read “Hey fascist, catch,” which some view as a video game reference, while others see it as political messaging. Additional casings contained internet meme references.
Robinson’s politics become murkier when examining his civic engagement. He registered to vote in Utah but never cast a ballot and claimed no party affiliation. A relative told police that Robinson had grown more political recently and expressed dislike for Kirk, but his voting record suggests someone disconnected from traditional political participation.
Some observers speculated that Robinson might be connected to the “Groyper” movement, followers of far-right commentator Nick Fuentes who use ironic memes and oppose mainstream conservatives like Kirk. However, investigators found no explicit evidence tying Robinson to this group.
What Made It Personal
Robinson’s romantic relationship may be important. His partner is transgender, and Kirk was known for strong opposition to transgender rights and LGBTQ issues. This personal connection to someone from a community Kirk criticized could have intensified Robinson’s animosity.
Utah’s public safety commissioner, Beau Mason, confirmed that Robinson’s partner has cooperated with investigators but emphasized they believe Robinson acted alone. Authorities are examining whether the partner or anyone else knew about Robinson’s plans.
The Transformation That Stunned Family
Perhaps most troubling is how completely Robinson changed from his upbringing. Raised in a deeply religious Mormon family in conservative southern Utah. Robinson’s alleged transformation into someone capable of political assassination represents a sharp departure from his background.
Cox noted that Robinson’s ideology had become “very different than his family.” A sheriff’s dispatcher who knew of Robinson described him as “a good kid until recently, when something went terribly wrong.“
This transformation appears to have accelerated recently, suggesting that whatever combination of online influences, personal circumstances, and ideological development led to his alleged radicalization happened relatively quickly.
Security Questions and Aftermath

The shooting raised questions about security at political events. Experts questioned the protection level at the Utah Valley University rally. Including officer numbers and the decision to hold the event outdoors. Kirk preferred being close to students during campus tours, making security arrangements challenging.
Tributes to Kirk have spread nationwide. Mourners wrapped around the Kennedy Center for a Sunday vigil. At the shooting site, people created makeshift memorials with flowers and flags, writing messages in chalk on campus sidewalks.
Online Radicalization Created a Political Assassin
Robinson’s case shows how online radicalization can transform someone from a typical young person into an alleged political assassin. The combination of ideological content, gaming culture, meme references, and personal grievances created a toxic mixture that culminated in planned violence.
Following Robinson’s initial court appearance on Tuesday, where he was formally charged with aggravated murder and prosecutors announced they will seek the death penalty, investigators continue piecing together what Charlie Kirk’s assassin’s motive was to commit this act of political violence.
